Interactive Use

Interactive work runs on a compute node. You get there with qrsh, which gives you a shell on a node for up to 48 hours. Jupyter, VS Code and RStudio run on that node too, and an ssh tunnel shows them in a browser on your own machine. The RStudio server is the exception. It is a dedicated node with its own web address and needs no tunnel.

Do not run interactive work on the login nodes

The login nodes slow and then kill processes that compute on them, which ends a notebook or an editor session with it. Start a session on a compute node first. Warning emails gives the thresholds.

Read Start an interactive session first. It shows you how to get a session with qrsh, what the limits are, and how to open the tunnel the other pages rely on. Then go to the page for the tool you use, whether that is Jupyter, VS Code, the RStudio server or RStudio on a compute node. If your work does not need a terminal or a browser, submit it as a job instead. See Running Jobs.
